I know what’s stopping you from being more active on LinkedIn. Here’s how to break the cycle…

Let’s be honest, LinkedIn can feel overwhelming if you’re new to it or haven’t braved its depths in a while. If your boss has started hinting (or downright demanding) you “get more active” on the platform, you’re not alone. Plenty of professionals, from fresh out of college office staff to established execs, feel that niggle daily: “Should I be doing more on LinkedIn?”

So, why do so many feel anxious about getting started on LinkedIn and posting? The answer isn’t as simple as “fear of judgment” or “I’m too busy.” The barriers to embracing LinkedIn are a mix of mindset, motivation, and a touch of digital overwhelm. And truthfully, most of us don’t want to risk an accidental career-limiting move with a clumsy post.

LinkedIn doesn’t have to be intimidating, and overcoming the hurdles can unlock real opportunities, whether that’s impressing your boss, expanding your industry reputation, or landing that dream job.

The real reasons people hesitate on LinkedIn

“I don’t know what to say.”

You’ve set up your profile, scrolled the feed, maybe even liked a post or two. But the idea of writing something yourself feels scary! You worry that if you put yourself out there, you’re going to be judged or laughed at.

“I’m worried about what colleagues will think.”

Putting yourself out there makes you visible, yes. But it’s also brave. Most office professionals hold back because they fear judgment, especially from their colleagues or the all-seeing boss.

“I’m not sure how it helps my career.”

You’re busy and don’t have time to dedicate to it, unless of course it’s going to turn the dial and bring you opportunities. The idea of spending time posting online seems somewhat pointless. Can it really make a difference?

“It feels like a productivity black hole.”

I’m not going to lie to you. LinkedIn can become addictive, and before you know it, you’re spending hours on there, and then you start to feel guilty that you’re wasting your time, or worse still, worried your boss might find out what you’re really doing, and your timesheets don’t stack up. So if your endless scroll sessions never lead to results, it’s hard to be excited about showing up.

Four ways you can overcome those LinkedIn barriers

1. Start small but be consistent

Take baby steps. The easiest way to overcome hesitation is to set yourself a micro-goal, such as liking or commenting on one post a day. It builds confidence and shows the algorithm you’re alive and engaged. Your profile will soon appear more frequently, which means you’ll start getting noticed by the right people.

2. Be yourself, don’t post like a robot

People crave connection, not corporate jargon or a ChatGPT copy/pasted post. Try sharing something interesting that happened to you this week (“I nearly had kittens when my boss asked me to do this…”), share a helpful article you’ve read, maybe on LinkedIn, or a shoutout to a colleague who has gone above and beyond for you recently. Don’t overthink it. Authenticity wins every time, and you’ll be surprised how colleagues start seeing you in a new light.

3. Jot down what you want to say before posting

Nobody wants to read an essay. So make sure to plan out what you intend to post. Share industry news, comment on someone else’s post, or re-share something relevant with your own thoughts as an overarching comment. Never just re-post content, as that looks lazy and tells me nothing about you, or why this particular post resonated with you so much.

4. Use tools for a confidence boost

Courses like Linkcredible (“Let’s Get LinkedIn!”) are created precisely for professionals like you. Training courses like this can guide you through the first posts, help you nail your profile basics, and give actionable tips so you can step up confidently. If you want a shortcut to results and less fumbling in the dark, investing a little time in structured training pays off, especially if it can improve your visibility

When you overcome the initial discomfort, LinkedIn transforms from a scary place into a playground for opportunity. Engage, share a little, comment well, and soon you’ll see:

More profile views from recruiters, business contacts, and yes, even your boss.

Industry peers applaud your ideas and invite you to speak, collaborate, or connect.

Personal growth as you learn, network, and inspire others (instead of just lurking in the background doom-scrolling for hours every day).

It all starts with one click, one comment, one post. It really is that easy!

The more you show up, the easier and more rewarding it gets. And get this… Most people are actually FAR more supportive and less judgmental than you fear.

So next time the boss says, “I want you to start using LinkedIn more,” smile. You’ve got this.
